BT Openzone technical information
BT Openzone uses the 2.4GHz radio frequency to send and receive
data at current speeds of up to 11Mbps over distances up to 100
metres. BT Openzone devices communicate with 'wireless LAN base
stations' that are in turn connected to the Internet.
BT Openzone uses the same IEEE 802.11b Wireless LAN protocol already
employed in offices and homes where fixed-wire solutions are hard
to install or insufficiently flexible.
The UK government lifted restrictions on the use of this technology
in public places in June 2002. Now BT can create partnerships with
businesses that are able to host BT Openzone hubs at their public
outlets.
BT Openzone uses the same frequency used by mobile phones. Engineers
have designed protocols to avoid interference problems. BT Openzone
signals are subject to the same forms of degradation that you occasionally
experience using a mobile phone, though you are likely to be much
nearer to the BT Openzone base station to start with.
